Some of you will have noticed on Twitter in the last week or so, that I have floated the idea of holding an online Open Mic Poetry Night – something that was met with a warm reception by fans of, and contributors to The Broken Spine, and a few others beyond our usual scope.

I must say, I am incredibly excited at the prospect of gathering on a monthly basis to host, and introduce to you wonderful poets. I genuinely hope to foster a warm community among all who visit. It is true that, Lockdown during this pandemic has taught me this if nothing else, we have not been using technology to its fullest. Indeed, we have the capacity to reach a whole host of people around the globe, but the truth is until last summer, I had never even considered getting on board with such a thing. More fool me!

Now we are in the midst of Lockdown: Round Three, here in the United Kingdom, and this pandemic is showing little, if any sign, of abating. With that being so, now is a fine time to start making a better use of what we have had all along.

I have been fortunate to have been invited to online, virtual book launches; to have launched my own debut chapbook online; launched our Artist Collective: Second Edition via Zoom; and taken a poetry class for year eight pupils in eastern Europe using the platform. I feel increasingly confident that now is a good time to host something regularly, under The Broken Spine banner.

Occasionally, we may be able to bring in guest speakers, but mostly, this is about celebrating all that we celebrate in print. We have a passion for striking imagery, and exciting and imaginative use of language. It would be remiss of us to ignore our ever-expanding audience and submissions catchment net.

So, on the last Sunday of each month I will sit at my laptop and host what I hope, rather what we hope, will become a fun, emotive, thriving, and must-attend virtual open mic night. As the finer details are worked out, we will announce them via our Twitter feed. However, what I can confirm now, is that at 19:00 (GMT) on Sunday, February 28th we will be conducting our inaugural session. Put the date in your diaries.
