When I was writing my poetry collection Adjusted, I was processing my mother’s passing on July 20th 2016. One of the things that I loved about my mom was her constantly pushing me to embrace the individual that I am. One example was her buying me the Linkin Park Album – Hybrid Theory when I was young and I knew all of my friends wouldn’t like this type of music that I was enjoying.
One year after my mom passed, to the day, Chester Bennington took his own life. In Adjusted there is a section called Midnight Theory, inspired by my two favourite LP albums, my mother’s memory and the torment of mental health issues. This playlist is one that I turn to when I need to collapse before I can go again.
Let’s drop the Hallmark card fantasies. Nature isn’t serene. It’s not here to cradle you while you write love letters to daffodils.
