The Broken Spine is accepting submissions for our #SelectedPoetry series this December 2024. We’re looking for bold, contemporary poetry that pushes boundaries, challenges norms, and leaves a lasting impression. If you’ve been wondering where to submit poetry online, this is your chance to showcase your work with a press that celebrates fearless, modern writing.
What We’re Looking For
We want narrative or lyric poetry that speaks with a distinct voice, offers emotional depth, and demonstrates artistic precision. Your poetry should provoke thought, stir emotions, and showcase a bold artistic vision. We’re drawn to poems that feel brave, honest, and resonant. While we appreciate striking imagery, it must serve the poem’s purpose—clarity and impact are essential. Abstractions are off-putting.
What We’re Not Looking For
- Traditional rhyme and meter: Strict forms, rhyming couplets, or rigid schemes are not a fit for The Broken Spine.
- Overly experimental visuals: Poems reliant on formatting gimmicks or unconventional layouts may not be suitable for our platform.
- Surface-level cleverness: We prioritise depth and authenticity over flashy but hollow tricks.
Submission Guidelines
- Submit up to TWO poems in a single document.
- Use 12-point Times New Roman font, single-spaced.
- Your work should prioritise clarity and accessibility—pieces with overly complex layouts may not be a good fit.
Submission Period: December 2024.
If you’re searching for spaces accepting bold poetry or narrative poetry, this is your opportunity to reach readers who value meaningful, non-rhyming poetry that dares to challenge and move.
A Note About Payment
We’re proud to be an independent, volunteer-run press, but unfortunately, we are unable to offer payment for submissions at this time. We understand the value of your work and apologise for this limitation—it is a result of our current resources, not a reflection of how much we value contributors.
Our mission is to honour and celebrate your poetry with care and intention. Publishing with The Broken Spine connects you with a passionate audience eager for modern poetry that explores challenging themes with skill and depth.
Our Mission
The Broken Spine is an independent press driven by a love for contemporary poetry and a commitment to amplifying voices that matter. We charge no submission fees for our #SelectedPoetry online, and while donations are optional, they’re deeply appreciated. These contributions help us offer free submission opportunities and sustain a platform for bold, boundary-pushing work.
