Spitfire Girls at Shakespeare North Playhouse: A Stirring Tribute to the Unsung Heroines of WWII

From 23rd to 26th April 2025, the Shakespeare North Playhouse in Prescot plays host to Spitfire Girls—a moving and uplifting new drama inspired by the real-life stories of the women who took to the skies during World War II.

Written by Katherine Senior and directed by Seán Aydon, this captivating production is co-produced by Tilted Wig and MAST Mayflower Studios, and supported by both the National Theatre’s Generate programme and Arts Council England.

Set on a stormy New Year’s Eve in 1959, the play centres on a powerful reunion between two women bound by their wartime service and the aircraft that carried their hopes and fears—the iconic Spitfire. As memories unfold inside a quiet pub, we’re transported back to a time when women defied the odds and soared above expectation—literally and figuratively.

Spitfire Girls is a celebration of courage, resilience, and friendship in the face of conflict. With warmth, humour, and emotional depth, it tells a story too often left out of the history books. This is women’s history in full flight—funny, heart-breaking, and filled with hope.

With a running time of two hours plus a 20-minute interval, and recommended for ages 10+, this production balances historical truth with theatrical storytelling, offering something special for both history lovers and modern theatre audiences alike.

Tickets are available now by visiting the box office at Shakespeare North Playhouse in person or by calling 0151 433 7156.
