Spitfire Girls at Shakespeare North: A Triumphant Tale of Courage, Sisterhood and Heartbreak

23rd – 26th April 2025

“Spitfire Girls captures both the raw heartbreak and soaring spirit of WWII’s forgotten heroines.”

Rating: 4.5 ★★★★★

A soaring success and not just in the skies for these pioneering women of courage.

If ever a play encapsulated the many and mixed emotions of WWII, then this was it!

The cyclical play commenced at the end of the story, cleverly jumping forward and backward in time seamlessly at relevant strategic points, ensuring every nuance of the play had been neatly covered by the end.

Superbly written by Katherine Senior, directed by Seán Aydon, and performed by the entire cast who were completely worthy of the standing ovation at the end of the play. In addition to the two leading actresses, the artists who played multiple roles delivered a first-class performance.

The story of two sisters, the elder, more sensitive yet stalwartly protective both emotionally and physically of her younger, more ‘flighty’ sister. Both desperately wanting to contribute to the war effort was utterly believable, and entirely heart-breaking at points; however, it demonstrated and solidified their unbreakable bond. Their desire to escape their work on the family’s farm, feel accomplished, needed, and useful drove their ambition forward. The play had equal comedic moments and raw heartbreak, especially during the loss of one of the younger sister’s fiancé that the elder sister harboured a reciprocated longing for. Their emotion was palpable for the audience to identify with.

Spitfire Girls is inspired by the extraordinary true stories of the women who dared to fly during WWII and the incredible bond that tied them together.
