Poetry & Pints: The Broken Spine Live Lands at The Grasshopper, Southport

On Saturday 31 January 2026, The Broken Spine Live rolls back into Southport for an evening of raw words and real ale, this time, in a brand-new venue: The Grasshopper, recently crowned CAMRA Pub of the Year 2024.

Running from 19:00 to 21:00, this free-entry poetry night brings together some of the sharpest tongues around. We’re proud to feature Jay Rafferty and Martin Kennedy Yates on the bill, two poets who drop poems like they mean it.

It’s our first outing at The Grasshopper, but it already feels like home. A proper micropub with an edge, it’s the kind of place where the beer’s poured right and the audience actually listens hard.

There’ll be open mic slots available on the night—five minutes each. If you’ve got something to say and the guts to say it out loud, we want to hear from you. Email the host, Alan, on [email protected] to book your slot in advance.

Hosted by Alan Parry, this isn’t your average polite poetry night. There’s no velvet rope, no literary snobbery, more a community of writers and listeners, coming together for the love of the word and the joy of the pint.

Whether you’re a poet, punter, or just someone who knows a good night when they see one, you’re welcome. Come for the poetry. Stay for the pints. Leave stirred.

See you at The Grasshopper.
