Manchester indie legends Blossoms have announced their biggest show to date. Coming off the back of a recent single and in the midst of anticipation for their fifth album, the band are undoubtedly in for a good year!
The long-standing five piece will play a one off show in Manchester’s Wythenshawe Park on Saturday 25th August 2024. The 30,000 capacity outdoor venue was christened this summer by fellow Manchester legend Noel Gallagher, who Blossoms have shared a bill with on numerous occasions. The venue is set within an historic and sprawling grounds with plenty of room to accommodate the band’s extensive fanbase.
Blossoms have been curating their loyal fanbase since 2013, when they played their first gig in Manchester’s Night and Day cafe. They’ve truly gone from strength to strength over the decade that’s followed, with several number one albums, countless UK, EU and US tours and some impressive support slots including music giants The Stone Roses and New Order. Their debut album Blossoms won them Brit Award and Mercury Prize nominations and stayed at number one for two consecutive weeks, and their last album, Ribbon Around The Bomb, became their third album to reach UK number one status.
Their most recent single, To Do List (After The Breakup), was produced alongside the band’s longtime producer James Skelly, of The Coral. It’s inspired by a poem of Rupi Kaur’s which gave it its title and much of its lyricism, and the five lads are joined by fellow Stockport singer Findlay, who provides a soft, sweet vocal. It’s also the band’s debut single on their new label, ODD SK, which refers to the surnames of each of the band members! It’s a bouncy number which could likely keep even the dampest of spirits up, so it’s certainly a song to see fans through the winter nicely.
And we’re quite sure it’ll sound even better live, in a rainy field in August, in what the band themselves believe will be a pinnacle moment in their career. Singer Tom Ogden said “Headlining our biggest show yet at Wythenshawe Park is going to be THE moment of our career so far for us. It makes me think of me and Joe going to watch Oasis and The Stone Roses at Heaton Park back when we were teenagers and how important these big summer Manchester shows are to people. It made us want to be in a band, affected what we wore and changed our lives forever. To misquote Dorothy, ‘Lads, I’ve a feeling we’re not on Oldham Street anymore!”
Blossoms will be joined by a range of the best acts in the modern indie scene, giving fans a whole day’s worth of entertainment. Young superstars Inhaler, who Blossoms have both supported and had as support numerous times, will head up the support bill, with Britpop icons Shed Seven. These two household names will be joined by activist guitarist Seb Lowe, Manchester band The K’s and Blossoms’ own (kind of) Ttrruuces- singer Findlay’s psych rock duo. Naturally, we can expect to see collaboration here, and fans will undoubtedly be treated to a live version of the new single complete with both its original singers.
With a lineup to die for and a promise to be part of a big moment in Manchester music history, it’s well worth picking your tickets up soon before they sell out. I know I will be!
