This was an exceptionally well written (Gerry Linford) and well performed play that had the audience in fits of laughter and in some parts, in tears. It was realistic, utterly relatable, hilariously funny yet sad, thought-provoking and surreal. This was theatre at its best!
Initially, we are introduced to the central character of Charlie Moon (Michael Starke) which the play centres around. He sets the scene well and has the audience utterly believing that he cannot believe in his own unfortunate demise. Its poignant relevance had the audience gripped from the outset as we were all wondering… if this is what it truly feels like to be unaware that you are in the afterlife?
The topic could be seen as dour and over-sentimental, however this was a hilariously funny play with all characters having equal one-liners to deliver.
All characters performed exceptionally well ensuring that the play from start to finish delivered a first class performance. The party loving eccentric Aunt Peggy played by Helen Carter was a joy to watch and what an incredible singing voice she has too. Charlie’s guilt ridden widow, Molly (Lynn Francis– Starke’s real life wife), emitted the raw desperation of grief as we saw her deal with her loss, guilt and overwhelming love, not forgetting her frustration and realisation of Charlie’ untimely passing.
It’s a haunted who-done-it with hilarity!
