Imaginarium Theatre delivered an electrifying and highly entertaining rendition of Jane Austen’s classic novel, adding a modern twist that captivated the audience. As a reviewer of both professional and amateur productions, observing audience reactions to adaptations of classics is always fascinating. While the original works often stand the test of time, this production delighted audiences with Rob Brennan’s clever writing and Gaynor La Rocca’s insightful direction. Their reinterpretation breathed new life into the Bennet sisters’ story, introducing Austen’s work to a younger generation.

Set in a contemporary northern town, this reimagining featured a mix of raucous humor from the Bennet sisters and their parents, alongside the pressing challenge of finding suitable partners. Facing the cost-of-living crisis, the Bennet family’s financial struggles are palpable. With the five daughters unable to afford moving out, Mrs. Bennet despairs at the lack of prospects for ‘flying the nest’. Lizzy, in particular, is uninterested in finding a partner. The arrival of the affluent Mr. Bingley and his friend, the aloof Mr. Darcy, into their town stirs the plot.

Lily Kelly’s portrayal of the headstrong Lizzy was commendable, with her line delivery and comic timing being West End-worthy. Amber-Page Moss excelled as Jane Austen, her haughty demeanor and timing a delight to witness. Despite the challenges of an opening night, including missed cues, Moss navigated these with professionalism.

However, the contributions of Movement Director Bev Norris-Edmunds, Sound Director Tarran Harris, and Costume Designer Liz Shelbourne significantly detracted from the play’s professionalism. The direction to have actors deliver lines then dash across the stage contributed to an amateur feel, at times reminiscent of a school play. The misuse of the stage, along with distracting movements and poor sound quality, made some lines inaudible and detracted from the overall experience.

This vibrant retelling maintained the humor, love stories, and class prejudices of the original, viewed through the lens of modern-day community life. Despite its many twists and engaging content, the production’s shortcomings necessitate attention before Imaginarium embarks on another project.

A disappointing two stars **
