I am all for inclusivity however this foul-mouthed play (in my opinion) failed to to hit the mark with its crude language, and over dramatised acting combined with tired, unfunny innuendos and not to mention actors that could not sing or act. Shockingly disappointing!
Ariel (River Medway) whose whole concept is to have the melodic voice of an angel simply couldn’t hit the high notes or hold a song; ended up on this packed press night by talking their way through songs. True to its Disney form, the play centres around the villain Ursula (Shawna Hamic) however I was unsure whether this was poor casting or a failed attempt at irony! Medway’s voice was willingly unpowerful and not ‘pure’ enough to adequately portray the character.
There were numerous funny elements to this play, with choreography and elaborate costumes that were impressive however, given the number of audience members, press included who did not return following the interval they obviously felt the same way as me and my plus one.
The publicity promised a night of raucous hilarity however it fell far short of the mark.
