What a fantastic gig performed in front of the iconic Liver Buildings on Liverpool’s Waterfront, a location fast becoming the epitome of culture in the music capital of the world!
With perfect weather for a three-day and night comedy and music festival, the headline act on Sunday was on top form. Over 11,000 people in attendance were all chanting and singing Deacon Blue’s vast array of hit tracks while dancing away in the balmy evening sunshine. The atmosphere was absolutely electric for the Old 45s tour.
Deacon Blue arrived on stage at 9:15 pm for their ninety-five-minute set to an extraordinarily loud cheer as the audience was in a high state of frenzy following superb sets from Rhiane Downey and the fabulous indie band of the moment, Lottery Winners. The six-strong band burst onto the stage singing “City of Love,” which lead vocalist Ricky Ross dedicated to Liverpool, saying, “This place holds a very special place in our hearts. We’ve played in all the major venues within the city and just love coming back to a place that is so welcoming, beautiful, and responsible for one of the biggest bands in the world!” This band is always amazing, but tonight they outperformed their normal high standard. They mixed up their set to include an acoustic version of “Chocolate Girl,” which was received with rapturous applause.
“Real Gone Kid” and “Dignity” sent the crowd stratospheric, belting out the lyrics word perfect.
Fans are loyal to this band and its members: Ricky Ross (lead vocals), co-vocalist Lorraine McIntosh, Dougie Vipond (drums), Jim Prime (keyboards), Gregor Philp (guitar), and Lewis Gordon (bass), all receiving ear-piercing screams when introduced to the crowd towards the end of the set. There was a vast age range in attendance, who were all well-behaved despite the event starting at 2 pm.
