Meet Paul Robert Mullen, a poet whose work captures the essence of his extensive travels and the profound observations he has made along the way. His poetry, acclaimed for its emotional depth, authenticity, and introspective themes, reflects a life spent exploring over 50 countries, each experience enriching his narrative voice.
Paul’s journey into poetry began at the age of 16, but it has evolved significantly over the years. His collected poems, It’s All Come Down to This: A Retrospective [Selected Poems & Writings 1999-2024], represent 25 years of poetic exploration. As Paul explains, “I think my voice and themes have evolved with experience. My writing is very much observational, and I’m fortunate to have traveled widely, soaking up life in all parts of the globe, which has informed my poems, stories, and narratives.”
Paul’s writing process is fluid and intuitive, allowing each poem to dictate its path. “I approach writing poetry with complete freedom. You should just spill a fleeting thought all over the page in whichever way it comes out, then use your metaphorical carving knife to craft it.” This flexible approach underscores his belief in letting the pen guide him, capturing the essence of his thoughts and emotions. He often finds that fleeting thoughts or profound emotional reactions spur him to write, and once an idea takes hold, he can usually craft a poem swiftly, often within 10 to 15 minutes.
Travel has been a key muse for Paul. The diversity in culture, landscape, architecture, attitudes, and the physicality of people have all been sources of inspiration. “I’ve immersed myself in different environments for years. The difference in being stood in New York as opposed to Tokyo, London, Beijing, or Paris is indescribable. It’s those places that inspire my writing because there is always something within eyeshot that’s waiting to blow your mind.”
Paul prefers to write in dynamic environments, finding inspiration in the hustle and bustle of coffee shops, pubs, trains, and planes. “My absolute ideal setting to write poetry is in a little cafe overlooking a beach and the ocean – I’ve found plenty of those over the years all over the world.” Although he edits at home, he thrives on the energy of new surroundings to spark his creativity.
Poetry, for Paul, is both introspective and reflective. His work often serves as a means for self-discovery and growth. “Lots of my work is autobiographical, and that has certainly served as a means to grow and discover one’s self. Art is all about self-discovery at the end of the day. If we don’t learn and grow through art, what are we?”
Paul Robert Mullen’s poetry invites readers into his world, offering glimpses of his experiences and the human condition. His work stands as a testament to the power of authentic expression and the importance of embracing one’s true self.
