The Southport Dramatic Club (SDC) Youth Theatre is set to captivate local audiences with their latest production, Songs for Southport. This special concert, performed by the award-nominated youth group, replaces their originally planned musical, Sweeney Todd, following the recent tragic events in Southport. Recognising the power of music to bring solace and unity, the young performers have curated an evening of reflective and uplifting songs that promise to resonate with audiences across Southport.
The concert will feature a carefully selected repertoire, including beloved classics from West Side Story, popular numbers from The Greatest Showman, and contemporary hits from Groundhog Day. True to their roots, the ensemble has also included several pieces from Stephen Sondheim, honouring their original production plans.
Deborah Bloom and Jonathon Plunkett, who direct the show, alongside musical director Adam Dutch, have worked tirelessly to bring this concert to life. Dutch’s special arrangements and harmonies are set to highlight the immense talent within the group, offering a night of musical theatre that Southport won’t want to miss.
Performances of Songs for Southport will take place from Thursday, 22nd August to Saturday, 24th August at 7:30 pm, with an additional matinee at 2:30 pm on Saturday. Tickets are affordably priced at £8, with £1 from each sale supporting the Southport Stronger Together appeal—a fund established to assist those affected by the recent knife attack at The Hart Space. Additionally, the youth members have chosen to support Alder Hey Children’s Hospital, with collections being held at each performance to raise further funds for this vital local institution.
Southport residents who have attended past SDC Youth Theatre productions know the exceptional calibre of these young performers. Their commitment to using their talents to support the community during such a difficult time is both admirable and inspiring. The entire Southport community is encouraged to attend and support this event, which promises to be a night of beautiful music and heartfelt tribute.
