Overall Rating: ★★★★

An utterly refreshing, thoroughly entertaining modern adaptation of Lewis Carroll’s classic, infused with a Scouse Christmas twist.

Considering this is a low-budget production competing with long-established regional theatres and ‘big players’ across Merseyside, this show offers genuine value for money for all ages. It features fresh writing, avoiding the lazy, tired jokes we’ve sadly come to expect from larger productions. The acting talent, singing voices, and comedic timing were exceptional on press and guest night. Even the morning after, I’m still recalling some of the lines and humming the catchy songs—a solid measure of a fantastic evening’s entertainment.

The cast couldn’t rely on big musical numbers or popular tracks performed by an on-stage band, and they were exposed at all times in the intimate theatre. Their off-stage acting—entering and exiting the round and managing costume changes at the back and sides of the stage without dressers—was impressively slick, adding to the production’s charm.

What this production lacked in elaborate costume designs and props, it more than made up for in sheer talent. The entire cast performed admirably, transitioning with ease between roles. For me, my plus one, and others in the press audience, the standout performance came from Tia Larsen. Her facial expressions, which continued even as she exited the stage, made her characters completely believable. Her portrayal of ‘Rabbit,’ with its French accent and mannerisms, was exceptional and would not be out of place in a major big-budget production. With producers and directors in the audience, I’m certain this actress has a bright future ahead. She is definitely one to watch.

The modern twist, featuring a Scouse mum shopping for Christmas gifts with her children—who would rather spend the day with their ‘fun’ aunt—was highly entertaining and realistic, resonating with both parents and children alike. The seamless narrative transitioned from childhood memories to an ensuing adventure that led back to the modern day, making for a delightful journey.

If you have the budget to see just one show over the Christmas period, let this be the one. Tickets start at just £5, with many payment options available. I strongly urge you to book and let Alice and her friends whisk you away to Wonderland in this marvellously whimsical festive tale.
