Poets deserve more than empty prestige. They deserve real recognition, real opportunities, and real support. That is why I am launching The Broken Spine Poetry Award – a prize that is free to enter, financially rewarding, and dedicated to elevating the voices that deserve to be heard.
But I cannot do this alone. I need your help.
Why This Matters
Too many poetry competitions feel like a gamble. Steep entry fees, vague promises, and little reward for the poets who fuel them. It is time for something better.
The Broken Spine Poetry Award will:
- Pay poets fairly: £1,500 for first place, £1,000 for second, £500 for third
- Be completely free to enter, ensuring everyone has a chance, not just those who can afford it
- Amplify winners through press coverage, publisher outreach, and a dedicated platform
- Publish an anthology featuring standout submissions
- Host a launch event to celebrate and showcase the winning poets
This is not just another poetry contest. It is a movement.
The Goal and the Deadline
To make this a reality, I need to raise £5,000 by the end of 2025 to launch the award in 2026. Every pound goes directly to the poets and the platform that will support them.
- £3,000 – Prize money, because poets deserve to be paid
- £1,000 – Promotion, so their work reaches beyond the competition
- £500 – Administrative costs, including judging, website, and processing
- £500 – A launch event and anthology, so these poets get the audience they deserve
Once we hit the funding goal, submissions will open with zero entry fees.
How You Can Make a Difference
If you believe poetry competitions should exist to uplift poets rather than exploit them, here is how you can help:
- Donate whatever you can. Every contribution brings us closer.
- Share this fundraiser with poets, presses, and literature lovers.
- Spread the word. The more people who know, the sooner we can launch.
