Matthew Bourne’s The Midnight Bell Returns to Liverpool Playhouse | 16–20 Sept 2025
Matthew Bourne’s award-winning The Midnight Bell returns to Liverpool Playhouse this September, bringing with it a haunting and emotionally charged portrait of 1930s London nightlife.
Set in the fog-bound streets of Soho and Fitzrovia, this evocative dance-theatre production delves into the lives of ordinary people emerging nightly from cheap boarding houses to pour out their passions, hopes, and heartbreak in the city’s pubs. At the heart of it all sits The Midnight Bell – a tavern and haven for a group of lonely hearts tangled in lovelorn affairs. Expect bitter comedies of longing, frustration, betrayal, and the occasional flicker of redemption.
Inspired by the work of acclaimed English novelist Patrick Hamilton (Twenty Thousand Streets Under The Sky, Hangover Square), the production draws from a gritty, deeply human literary tradition rooted in the working-class experience – and the London pub.
Hailed by The Observer as “the undisputed king of dance theatre,” Matthew Bourne brings his masterful storytelling to life once again in this beautifully melancholic, movement-driven tale of love and loss.
