Cinderella at Shakespeare North is a Joyful, Clever Twist on a Classic
It was hilariously funny, from start to finish; contained topical and local references; and a musical score that the all age audience identified with.
Cinderella was enchanting and a through feel good panto. It even had audience participation that made you feel involved in the storyline rather than a tick box exercise that many pantos now deploy.
Without wishing to give away the surprise, the plot has been given a clever modern twist by Nick Lane. The panto revolves around the magical antics and journey of a trainee fairy who is ‘fed-up’ in her current role as a tooth fairy due to battles with sleeping children and pillows that are intent on squashing her; she wistfully hankers after becoming a fully fledged fairy godmother.
The entire cast: Emma Grace Arends, Emma Bispham, Thomas Cotran, Elliott Kingsley and Charlie Mae McKevitt display their extreme talents in both singing and acting making this play highly entertaining and enjoyable for all.
The props, set design and costumes need to be highly commended too as they were in keeping with the narrative and to a high quality.
