Ghost Stories Returns to Liverpool: More Talk Than Terror in This Overhyped Haunt

Intriguing, spooky and thought provoking. The long-running West End hit returned to The Liverpool Playhouse this to a sell-out audience where it was first performed.

The scene was set and narrated by Professor Goodman, (Dan Tetsell) arch-sceptic out to debunk the paranormal. He eloquently embarked on regaling the audience with a quizzical investigation of three apparent hauntings – as recounted by a night-watchman, a teenage boy, and a businessman awaiting his first child – Whilst entertaining on occasions, the narrations approved by the writer’s Andy Nyman and Jeremy Dyson were too lengthy detracting from the play, making you lose interest as you just wanted the actors to be able to ‘get on with it’.

The play’s had good set design making the transition between stories seamless.  Additionally, the sounds and smells associated with each play permeated the auditorium adding to a sensory and auditory experience.

For me, it did not live up to the hype of a smash-hit, spine-tingling production that promised to exhilarate audiences and keep you on the edge-of-your-seat. In fact, it was sadly mediocre and overall disappointing.
