Review: The Last Laugh – Liverpool Playhouse – 23–27 September 2025

★★★★★

The Last Laugh was a truly outstanding masterpiece of theatre. It covered the lives—and, in particular, the final performances—of three icons of British comedy: Eric Morecambe (Bob Golding), Tommy Cooper (Damian Williams), and Bob Monkhouse (Simon Cartwright).

Each actor had studied their character so closely, refining their mannerisms and idiosyncrasies to such an extent that you’d be forgiven for thinking you were witnessing the actual all-time greatest comedy heroes themselves.

The audience were riveted throughout the two-hour performance and leapt to their feet at the end of the one-act play, giving a well-deserved standing ovation that lasted over ten minutes.

The show was humorous, yet sad in many parts—quick-witted and poignant—demonstrating the love and respect these men had for one another, and what it took out of each of them personally to endeavour to have the last laugh on stage. It also explored their childhoods, reasons for entering the entertainment industry, divorce, depression, alcoholism, and the deep impact and close bond they shared.

Bob Monkhouse, in particular, was depicted as a clever and caring maestro of comedy—utterly supportive of the other two—giving a different perspective on his life from the one portrayed by the tabloid newspapers.
