Submission Guidelines

What are we looking for?
We are looking for work that excites us and shakes us to the bone. We enjoy reading work that employs an imaginative use of language, shows rather than tells, and offers a genuine sense of place.
Flash Fiction (Online)
Editors: Elizabeth Kemball and Lucy Aur
We look forward to reading highly imagistic work that makes us stop and think. We enjoy flash fiction that gives us a small glimpse into a character’s life, a moment of significance, the tiny little butterfly effects in our day to day, or home in on small things we overlook. Shock us and surprise us, trick us into following you down one path before changing direction.
We will read submissions of flash fiction during the months of January, April, July and October.
Submissions are to be made by completing the relevant advertised form. See our social media feeds.
We are seeking 12 stories to publish over the course of the calendar year on thebrokenspine.co.uk
Please submit a maximum of ONE flash fiction piece of UP TO 500 WORDS.
There is no set theme for these pieces, we want to see a wide breadth of voices and subjects. We ask that you do not submit works that explicitly deal with SA/SV, or graphic depictions of: sexual acts, violence, suicide and/or self-harm.
Poetry (Online)
Editors: David Hanlon and Katie Jenkins
We are not fans of rhyming poetry, not traditional form and meter. We prefer Narrative poetry that shines and has a sense of flair/voice/style. We believe that emotions, feelings, honesty and bravery are great if they are cultivated.
We will read submissions of poetry during the months of June, December and March.
Submissions are to be made by completing this form. See our social media feeds.
We are seeking poetry submissions to publish on a rolling schedule in clusters over the course of the year on thebrokenspine.co.uk
Please submit a maximum of TWO poems in one document.
Print Editions
