Renowned musician, Southport’s own, Marc Almond, celebrated for his contributions to both solo endeavours and the iconic Soft Cell, is set to captivate audiences once again with his upcoming album release, I’m Not Anyone, scheduled for 12th July 2024. Almond’s latest offering promises a collection of curated covers spanning various genres, ranging from psychedelic and prog rock to folk, gospel, and soul.

Almond, currently residing in Portugal, shares his enthusiasm for curating this album, stating, ‘I always approach curating an album of covers with a lot of joy as it means a year or so of listening to songs, old and new, making lists from which I add or subtract songs and in the process discover, or rediscover, some half-forgotten gems.’

Reflecting on his selection process, Almond emphasises the emotional resonance of each track, noting, ‘These aren’t particularly storytelling songs (though for me, lyrics always come first) but more than ever this time I’ve gone for how a song makes me feel and the emotional resonance it holds – reflective songs for an older artist, perhaps.’

The album, produced by the talented Mike Stevens, boasts an impressive lineup of covers, including Blue Cheer’s I’m The Light, Neil Diamond’s Lonely Looking Sky, and King Crimson’s I Talk To The Wind, among others. Each track receives Almond’s distinctive touch, infusing it with a renewed vitality while staying true to its essence.

The preview track, a rendition of Bob Lind’s folk classic Elusive Butterfly, offers a glimpse into the album’s transcendent themes, exploring the beauty of nature and the ephemeral nature of life and love. Almond’s interpretation adds to the song’s storied history, following in the footsteps of legends like Aretha Franklin and Cher.

Highlighting the album’s diversity, Almond showcases his versatility by duetting with Bryan Chambers on reworked gospel lament Trouble of the World, transforming it into a soulful hymn for peace and resolution.

As Almond commemorates his 45th year in music, he looks forward to sharing his latest creations with fans across the UK and Europe. The album release will be accompanied by a headline tour in September, featuring cover songs exclusively, culminating in a series of performances alongside Jools Holland from October to December.
